If you're looking for an accessible afternoon out near Derby, Elvaston Castle Country Park is one of the area's best places to enjoy the outdoors. Located just a few miles east of Derby city centre on Borrowash Road, Elvaston, Derbyshire, DE72 3EP, the park spans over 300 acres of beautiful woodland, formal gardens and open parkland, making it an ideal wheelchair accessible destination to enjoy exploring nature.

Is Elvaston Castle wheelchair accessible?

So what is wheelchair accessibility like at Elvaston Castle? One thing to note before you visit is that Elvaston Castle itself is not open to the public, so it is not possible to explore inside the historic building. However, don't let that put you off. The surrounding grounds are the real highlight and are where you'll spend most of your visit.

Many of the main routes around the estate are wide, relatively level and surfaced, making them suitable for most wheelchairs. You'll find a combination of smooth tarmac paths and well-compacted gravel or soil tracks that lead through the parkland and woodland.

Accessible paths and woodland walks

One of the things I love most about Elvaston is the variety of scenery. You can roll through peaceful woodland, alongside open grassland and around the historic gardens allowing you to discover new routes and places.

Most of the main routes are easy to navigate in dry weather, although some of the woodland trails can become muddy after heavy rain. If you're using a manual wheelchair, it's worth sticking to the surfaced paths during wetter months.

The beautiful Italian Gardens

The formal Italian Gardens are one of the highlights of any visit. The neatly clipped hedges, colourful seasonal planting and historic architecture make this one of the most picturesque areas of the park. The wide pathways allow you to enjoy the gardens with plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs along the way.

Café and facilities

When you need a break, there is a café serving hot and cold drinks, cakes and snacks. There are plenty of benches and picnic spots around the grounds if you'd prefer to bring your own food and simply enjoy the surroundings.

Accessibility is well catered for, with:

  • Accessible parking close to the main entrance.

  • Accessible toilets throughout the park.

  • A Changing Places toilet located near the main car park.

  • Plenty of seating around the estate for rest stops.

Final thoughts

Elvaston Castle Country Park is one of our favourite accessible green spaces around Derby. Whether you're looking for a gentle roll through beautiful gardens, a peaceful woodland wander or somewhere to relax with a coffee, there is plenty here to enjoy.

While some of the natural trails can become muddy in wet weather, the network of surfaced paths means it is still possible to enjoy a large part of the estate throughout the year.
