Whilst staying in Palermo, we took the train to visit the seaside town of Cefalu and to the famous Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.

The trains are great in Italy and we found them the best way to get around the island. If you need assistance I would recommend using the Sala Blu App to book this. It's really simple to use and you can choose what type of assistance you require.

Discovering an accessible Cefalu...

The journey from Palermo Train Station to Cefalu was 50 minutes east along the coast. It was a lovely journey right on the coastline next to the sea! Cefalu Train Station is a Sala Blu station which means you can book wheelchair assistance up to 48 hours in advance.

Cathedral in Cefalu

When we arrived in Cefalu we went straight to the medieval centre of the town to see the cathedral. Unfortunately it wasn't accessible but the area was nice to visit with a piazza and bars around it. We then carried on exploring lots of narrow cobbled streets and walked down to the beach where there was crystal clear sea! We sat here for a while to bask in the sunshine! We then walked into the more modern part of Cefalu where there were more beaches and a lovely flat promenade.

Seaside at Cefalu

We had a nice day out in Cefalu and found it to be mostly accessible as long as you don't mind a few cobbles! There wasn't much to visit here but the beaches and sea are beautiful and the town has lots of nice shops and restaurants.

Is Agrigento accessible?

We decided to take the train south to Agrigento from Palermo which took about two hours. From the train station we then caught a bus from outside the station to the Valley of the Temples ticket office entrance at Porta V. The bus was a normal urban bus with a fold out ramp in the centre.

Agrigento Valley of Temples

Agrigento is known for the Valley of the Temples and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world and has many Greek temples that were built over 2500 years ago and display the grandeur of Ancient Greek civilisation in Sicily.

Agrigento Valley of Temples

It was a beautiful warm day with not a single cloud in the sky, there is no shade here so I wouldn't recommend visiting during the hot summer months. Most of the main sites were accessible to get to by wheelchair however some were not and off roading was needed!

Agrigento Valley of Temples

The temples are incredible and I found it very hard to understand how the Ancient Greeks managed to carry such huge and heavy pieces of stone up to the top of the hill! Two of the temples are virtually intact and are known as some of the best examples outside of Athens.

We had a great time visiting the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and found it to be mostly flat and easy navigate with my wheelchair. It is also possible to pre-book an electric wheelchair there if you need some extra help.
